Privacy Policy

The short version

Cubby keeps everything on your Mac. It has no account, no sync, no analytics and no crash reporting. We never see what you copy, and we could not if we wanted to — there is nowhere for it to go.

The one thing Cubby sends over the network is a request asking whether a newer version exists. You can switch that off in Settings.

What Cubby stores, and where

Your clipboard history, screenshots, screen recordings and any text read off the screen are written to ~/Library/Application Support/Cubby/ on your own machine. Nothing is uploaded anywhere.

Those files are created owner-only — directories at 0700, files at 0600 — and Cubby re-checks this at every launch. No other account on the machine can read them.

Deleting an item removes the row and the file behind it. Clearing the history, or deleting the folder above, removes everything.

What Cubby refuses to record

  • Anything an application marks as confidential — this is how password managers flag a copied password. Cubby honours that marker and never stores the value.
  • Anything marked transient or as an automated copy.
  • Files copied in Finder.
  • Anything copied by an application you have added to the ignore list in Settings.

Cubby cannot recognise a password by looking at it. It can only honour a marker the copying application sets, and a few applications set none — 1Password's browser extension is the known example. Naming that application in Settings is the reliable fix.

The one network request

Cubby checks for updates using Sparkle, a widely used open-source updater. About once a day it fetches a small file from raw.githubusercontent.com listing the current version. Cubby sends no information about you, your Mac or your clipboard in that request. As with visiting any website, GitHub will see the connection itself, including your IP address.

Cubby does not enable Sparkle's optional system-profile reporting. If a new version exists, the download comes from GitHub as well.

Turning this off: Settings → Updates → Check automatically. Cubby then makes no network requests at all until you ask it to look.

Permissions macOS asks you for

  • Screen Recording — required by macOS for any screenshot or screen recording, including Apple's own tools. Cubby uses it only while you are taking one.
  • Accessibility — lets Cubby paste into the application you were last in. Without it Cubby copies and you press ⌘V yourself.
  • Microphone — only if you switch the microphone on before starting a screen recording. It is off every time by default.

Text recognition runs on your device using Apple's Vision framework. Images are never sent anywhere for processing.

This website

These Cubby pages set no cookies and run no analytics or advertising scripts. Our hosting provider keeps ordinary server logs, which include IP addresses, as any web server does. Downloads are served by GitHub, which keeps its own logs.

Payments

Cubby is currently free. If and when it is sold, payment will be handled by a third-party payment provider acting as merchant of record. We would receive your email address and the country used for tax purposes. We would never receive your card details.

Children

Cubby is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from anyone, of any age.
